At Hillsborough Community College students at the Brandon Campus seeking A.S. degrees in Internet Services Technology may take advantage of a special partnership with Web Yoda Inc, one of several international organizations providing webmaster certification by WC3, IEEE, and industy standards. Students may attempt two online exams for certication: Associate Webmaster Professional (AWP) and Certified Webmaster Professional (CWP)

The WebYoda Associate Webmaster Professional (AWP) certification , is for anyone who wants to improve his/her Internet, XHTML, and CSS skills without making a major commitment. This certification is the prerequisite to the CWP, and provides the skills needed to acquire an entry-level Webmaster position for maintaining existing static Web sites or building simple Web sites from scratch. To obtain the title of "WebYoda Associate Webmaster Professional (AWP)" at HCC Brandon, the student will complete the four Web Yoda Webmaster Certification courses listed below and passing the AWP online exam.


  • Mastering the Internet
         (during CGS 1555)
  • Beginning HTML/XHTML
         (during CGS 1555/2820)
  • Advanced HTML/XHTML
         (during CGS 2820)
  • Cascading Style Sheets
         (during CGS 2820)
To pass a Web Yoda course, the student must complete all class exercises, bonus exercises, and homework assignments required by Web Yoda as a partial substitute for similar assignments in CGS 1555 or CGS 2820 HCC credit courses. The online comprehensive exam consists of 60 questions drawn from the content covered in the four classes. The passing rate is 80%. Students purchase the AWP package directly from Web Yoda which contain the four online courses and one certificate for the AWP online exam for $120.

The WebYoda Certified Webmaster Professional (CWP) certification , is designed to improve a candidate's proficiency in a broad range of Internet-related subjects. This certification is the prerequisite to the advanced certifications, and provides a solid foundation of skills needed to acquire a mid-level Webmaster position or to building a personal Web-development business from the ground up. The CWP exam can not be attempted without first passing the "WebYoda Associate Webmaster Professional" exam with a score of 80% or better. To obtain the title of "WebYoda Certified Webmaster Professional (CWP)" at HCC Brandon, the student will complete the four Web Yoda Webmaster Certification courses listed below and passing an CWP online exam.

  • Web Design & Graphics
         (during COP 2823 or CGS 2822)
  • Java Survival Skills
         (during COP 2822)
  • E-Business
         (during CGS 2069 or CGS 2172)
  • E-Marketing
         (during CGS 2554 or CGS 2069)

To pass a Web Yoda course, the student must complete all class exercises, bonus exercises, and homework assignments required by Web Yoda as a partial substitute for similar assignments in COP 2823, CGS 2822, COP 2822, CGS 2069, CGS 2172 or CGS 2554 HCC credit courses. If a student has previously completed any of the HCC courses, then the assignments must be completed independent of the completed course. All Web Yoda assignments are posted on the student's Web Site until the certication exam is completed. The online comprehensive exam consists of 60 questions drawn from the content covered in the four classes. The passing rate is 80%. If purchased directly from Web Yoda, the cost is $120 for the four courses plus one exam certificate.

Students may purchase a Tools Package which includes four courses from the remaining six courses HomeSite, Cold Fusion 101, E-commerce/Web Site Creations. There are two additional courses in production and should be available this summer or next Fall. These include XML and Dreamweaver. It should be noted that all Web Yoda courses are continually updated almost monthly. HTML was upgraded to XHTML. Flash 4 was converted to Flash 5 and will be upgraded to Flash MX this summer.

The instructor recommends that students consider the absolute best bargain on the web: A one time fee of $300 includes access to all Web Yoda courseware current, all updates and future plus two exam certificates.


World Organization of Webmasters

The World Organization of Webmasters (WOW) is a non-profit professional assoication dedicated to providing community, education, and certification for web professionals. It is recommended that HCC IST majors obtain their Web Yoda certifications as a start to their professional credentials. The WOW examinations begin at $125 for the CAW, and the other four examinations are $195 each.

The WOW Certified Associate Webmaster (CAW) examination, the first exam HCC Brandon student should attempt, measures essential competencies for aspiring or practicing Webmasters. The examinee must demonstrate knowledge at the standard defined by this test specification in the general areas of:

  • Internet basics
  • HTML
  • Web graphics
  • Web multimedia
  • Web site design
  • Web site management
  • Web project management
  • Web marketing
  • Web accessibility
  • Basic legal issues

The WOW Certified Profession Webmaster (CPW) is the next level of certification and is achieved either by passing the four Associate-level certifications above or by passing the CPW exam directly. These certifications are meant for experienced industry professional who have been working in this field. CPW exams are available through VUE and Certiport.

WOW Certified Professional Webmasters are practitioners of web communication. They are responsible for all aspects of an organization's web presence, including web content development, technical operations, and business management. They may have specific areas of expertise, but are most valuable as generalists who can manage all aspects of web operations.

HCC Brandon Students may qualify for a discount (or free) for the WOW exams when they become WOW members and arrange through John Taylor to take the exams at the Brandon Testing Center
